Overcome is the second track on Laura Mvula’s second studio album The Dreaming Room released in June 2016. The song, written by Laura Mvula and Nile Rodgers, was released as a single earlier that year, in January.
While working on the album in 2015, Mvula sent the song to Prince to get his advices: "I wanted to send him where I’d got to with the album so far, because he’d been championing my music since day one. I sent him Overcome that I’d done with Nile Rodgers and he replied immediately: ‘This is killin’, I want to be on this song.’ By this time, John Scofield and Nile had done their parts, and it was mixed and mastered. I told him there were already two legends on there and he said he didn’t care, he wanted to play on the song as well. So he did his own mix of Overcome with a new part." Overcome features Nile Rodgers, John Scofield and Lionel Loueke on guitar, Michael Olatuja on electric bass, Troy Miller on drums and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Upon its release, Overcome was selected as the "Purple Pick of the Week" by Prince on Tidal. However, the version with his contribution was not included on the digital maxi-single or the album (released in June 2016, two months after his passing). Laura Mvula said: “I feel like I want to keep it to myself for ages. But I will probably put it out there when the time is right, when the album has had space to breathe."
This version remains unreleased.
